I’m still in a power-saving mode because I’ve been incredibly busy lately again, but I figured I’d quickly post two of the C class higher-end insei games I’ve played.
The first one here was against the second-ranked insei: this was probably the game that I lost the most badly last weekend. Comments are mostly courtesy of Kobayashi Chizu-sensei, who kindly analysed most of my last weekend’s gamest when we met last Wednesday. She gave me some tasty French cheese and bread as a present, too!
The result up to 34 in the upper left is quite terrible for white: even though white’s group lives comfortably, black’s shape on the both sides gets incredibly strong, and white has little to aim for in the terms of invasions in the future.
For white 40, taking the upper right corner with q18 is bigger, because then white can aim for an invasion at m17.
White 50 is relatively small: r18 instead is timely, as it is bigger territory-wise, and again gives room to an upper-side invasion with the sequence of white n16, black o16, and white l16. Without white r18, that invasion is less effective, as the black three stones are significantly stronger.
Black 51 and white 52 both are nonsense: s3 is the biggest point on the board.
The white sequence from 64 on was a crazy experiment, which just couldn’t work out. Black saves his groups easily, and gains a significant point lead.
The record ends at 113, but the game actually did continue some further: white succeeded in getting an unjustifiably big amount of territory in the centre, and for a while the board situation was pretty even, with a slight black lead. White messes up a bit in the late yose, ends up being about five points behind with komi included, and resigns.
To end on a more positive note, here is the one game I won last weekend, against Mimura Tomoyasu’s 12-year-old son. This game was a pretty entertaining show! The comments are mostly from what we reviewed right after the game.
White 24 feels unnecessarily difficult, something like l17 instead should be plenty. By black 31, the game is not bad for black.
Fighting starts from white 42 on: neither player felt like backing down. The fight is probably better for black, since the white right-side group feels really uncomfortable.
White 100 should be one intersection lower, at d9 instead: not only is it better shape for white, but it’s also more difficult for black to live then.
By white 108, I thought I’d have enough liberties for any semeai that could occur, and I went for the kill. My judgment was completely intuition-based, however, and in a sense I was lucky that I didn’t end up losing by for example one liberty.
The rest of the game is a simple liberty-taking contest; white tries some tricks in the upper right corner, but black is able to fend the attempts off successfully. After 173, the game continues for a bit longer as white tries to capture black f3 on a large scale, but when white isn’t able to capture it big enough, he resigns.
As last Tuesday I went to Finland’s independency day party at the Finnish embassy, this week’s English class was moved to today. Since Chizu-sensei already commented most of my last weekend’s games, though, I will probably present a game from Mimura-sensei’s dojo from this Wednesday. If the review gets interesting, I’ll probably post the game with comments here afterwards.
This weekend, I’m playing against the lower end of class C again, but also against the insei numbered one and two. I’m feeling significantly more confident than last weekend, and that will hopefully also be visible in the games that I play!
